Guides for tradies

Tool theft: how to protect your van and tools

Losing your tools can stop work for days and cost thousands. Thieves know that work vans and utes are full of valuable gear, and many break-ins take only seconds. This guide covers simple steps that make your vehicle a harder target and help you recover faster if the worst happens.

Why tradie vans get targeted

  • Tools are valuable, easy to carry and easy to sell
  • Vans often follow a routine, parked in the same places at the same times
  • Sign-written vans tell everyone what is inside
  • Standard van locks can be weak, especially on older models

You can’t make a van theft-proof, but you can make it slower and riskier than the next one.

Lock it down

  • Fit extra locks to the back and side doors, such as deadlocks or slam locks
  • Fit a lock or plate over weak points in the door locks if your model is known for them
  • Keep the van locked even when you are working nearby
  • Use a lockable steel tool box or vault inside the van for the most valuable gear
  • Chain or cable-lock ladders and large items on roof racks

Park smart

  • Park with the back and side doors against a wall or another vehicle where you can
  • Park in well-lit places, ideally in view of a camera
  • At home, use a garage or a secure yard if you have one
  • Don’t leave tools in the van overnight if you can avoid it
  • Vary your routine where possible

Take tools out overnight

The safest tool is one that isn’t in the van. Bringing the most valuable tools inside every night takes a few minutes and removes most of the risk. Make it easy with:

  • Tool bags or cases that carry several items at once
  • A set place inside to store them
  • A quick checklist of what comes in each night

Mark and record your tools

Marked and recorded tools are harder to sell and easier to get back.

  • Engrave or mark your tools with your name, business name or a unique code
  • Keep a list of every tool with brand, model, serial number and value
  • Take photos of your tools and the serial numbers
  • Store the list somewhere other than the van, like in the cloud

If tools are stolen, this list helps the police, second-hand dealers and your insurer.

Tracking and alarms

  • A GPS tracker on the van can help recover it if it is taken
  • Small trackers can be hidden in tool cases or expensive tools
  • An alarm on the load area makes noise when a door is forced
  • A camera in the van or on the property can help identify thieves

Compare the cost of these against what you carry. For many tradies, a few hundred dollars of security protects tens of thousands of dollars of gear.

Check your insurance

Many standard vehicle policies don’t cover tools left in the vehicle, or only cover them in certain conditions, like when they are locked out of sight or not left overnight.

  • Read the fine print on your vehicle and business insurance
  • Ask about tool cover for theft from a vehicle, and any overnight rules
  • Keep your tool list up to date for any claim

If you are broken into

  1. Don’t touch more than you need to, in case there is evidence
  2. Report it to the police and get a report number
  3. Give the police your tool list, serial numbers and photos
  4. Contact your insurer as soon as you can
  5. Check local second-hand shops and online marketplaces for your gear
  6. Fix the weak point before you load the van again

Quick checklist

  • Extra locks on doors, ladders locked to the rack
  • Park smart, against walls and in light
  • Valuable tools out of the van overnight
  • Tools marked, listed and photographed
  • Tracker or alarm if the value justifies it
  • Insurance checked for tools in vehicles
  • A plan for what to do after a break-in

For setting up the van itself, see fitting out a work van or ute.
